It can lead to a range of complications and can even be fatal. Reminders to take medication can become the responsibility of family members or carers. With certain conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, taking medication exactly on time is crucial along with other measures to support treatment of the condition.
Using a smart device to help with adherence takes the pressure off others while assisting patients to retain their independence. AdhereTech is a smart pill bottle that detects and records when the patient has opened the bottle to take their medication. If the patient is overdue, the system will send them an alert in the form of a text message or automated phone call reminding them to take their medication.
When it’s time for the prescription to be refilled, AdhereTech sends an alert to participating pharmacies and lets them know to follow up with the patient. Studies have shown that the device led to an increase in taking pills on time and patient satisfaction.
